Men’s Soccer To Play 13-Game Slate In 2022

Men’s Soccer To Play 13-Game Slate In 2022

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Head Coach Brian Dougher returns for his 18th season at the helm of the men’s soccer program and ahead of a 13-game regular season schedule with sights again on a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) title run and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament appearance.

The SeaWolves will finish their preseason with scrimmages against Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and the University of Maine at Farmington, both NCAA Div. 3 programs, before dawning the regular season on the road against NJCAA-opponent Massasoit Community College on Saturday, September 3.

SMCC hosts Northern Essex Community College in its home-opener on Wednesday, September 7 ahead of travel to Warwick to take on the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday. The SeaWolves host a familiar foe in Bridgton Academy on Monday, September 12—earning a split in their previous two meetings.

The team will travel to the reigning YSCC champions Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, September 14 for the first of two regular season meetings—this one noted as non-conference. SMCC will officially begin its conference slate on Saturday, September 17 at Vermont Technical College ahead of a home date with the Panthers from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences one week later—an opponent the SeaWolves are without a win against.

A road trip to NHTI will round out September and a visit to Paul Smith’s College will start October. SMCC is due to entertain the USCAA Div. 1 Bobcats from Bryant and Stratton College in Albany followed by home matches with Bristol Community College on Monday, October 10 and CMCC on Thursday, October 13. The SeaWolves are scheduled to close the regular season and a two-game series with Bridgton Academy on Saturday, October 15.

The 2022 season will feature a 6-team YSCC postseason format with a #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5 play-in round the weekend of Oct. 22-23. The Final Four stage will be held at NHTI (Concord, N.H.) Oct. 29-30 with a chance at a bid to the USCAA National Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. Nov. 10-14.

Looking ahead to the season, Coach Dougher states, "I am really excited about this coming season. The strength of the players returning combined with the work they have done in the offseason will put us in a great place to compete for another Yankee Conference title. Returning a very strong midfield with last year’s captains David Wilson and Dylan Weyeneth will complement the goal-scoring opportunities that will be provided by All-Conference player Eriksen Shea, and the deft touch of Laszlo Dorogi. Making us even stronger is the addition of some phenomenal incoming freshmen. Right now three players will push each other for the starting role of keeper and the defense will be sured up with a combination of players from around Maine. Our midfield will be athletic and move the ball well against the opponent. We are looking forward to challenging the rest of the Yankee Conference and an opportunity to represent SMCC at the USCAA National Tournament."

All home soccer games are played at Wainwright Recreation Complex at 125 Gary L. Maietta Way in South Portland.
