Penn State Overcomes Lady Seawolves in Double Header

Cocoa Beach, FL - The Lady Seawolves wrapped up their preseason play yesterday when the took on USCAA foe Penn State - Hazleton. The Seawolves were much improved on the offense putting up more runs in the first Penn State matchup than the four previous preseason contests but the Lady Seawolves fell short in both games, falling 7-3 in the first and 7-6 in the second.

In game one Penn State jumped out to early 3-0 on a base clearing double by outfielder Carli Rossi (Hazleton, PA) in the first inning. SMCC answered in the top of the second when first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) scored on an error, making the score 3-1. In the top of the fourth catcher Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME) scored a second run for SMCC on error and then outfielder Danielle Mobbs (Richmond, VT) knocked in third baseman Lindsey Howell (Limington, ME) to knot the score at three runs apiece. In the fifth inning the Lady Seawolves were plagued by errors, giving up four runs to Penn State, then Penn stepped up their defense, holding SMCC scoreless and pulling out the 7-3 triumph. 

In the second match of the double header the Lady Seawolves were the ones to take an early lead. Newcomer Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) scored on an RBI by pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH). Lewis got driven by a Lindsey Howell (Limington, ME) hit and Howell went on to score a run of her own, putting the Seawolves on top 3-1 at the end of the first inning. The scoring continued into the second when Allard doubled to get on base and again Lewis brought her home. The Seawolves gave up one run in the second but still held the 4-2 lead. Penn State chalked up one run in the fourth,  tied the game, 4-4 with a score in the sixth and the took the lead scoring three runs in the seventh. Trailing 7-3 the Lady Seawolves battled back scoring two runs in the eighth and putting a base runner in scoring position with no outs to tie the game but they could not bring the runner home and lost a hard fought battle, 7-6.

The Lady Seawolves end their preseason play at 0-6, they will be back in action on Saturday March 22nd with a double header against Braircliffe College.
