Lynx Sink Seawolves in Double Header

Lynx Sink Seawolves in Double Header

South Portland - This afternoon the Lady Seawolves competed in their fourth consecutive double header in four days. In much more temperature-friendly conditions, the Seawolves matched up against the Lady Lynx from New Hampshire Technical Institute in only their third and fourth conference games of the spring season. Despite the best efforts of Seawolves' pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH), who pitched all eight games for the Lady Seawolves in the past four days and who was able to rack up 14 strikeouts in this afternoon's two contests, the Lady Lynx of NHTI were still able to prevail 8-3 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.

In the first contest the Lady Lynx jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. The Seawolves' defense held them scoreless for the second and third inning but a homerun by pitcher Kasey Tucker in the fourth gave the Lynx a three run advantage. Finding themselves trailing 7-0, after giving up four runs in the fifth inning, the Lady Seawolves finally found some offensive rythmn in the fifth inning. Third baseman Shannon Blanchard (Windsor, ME) got things rolling with a single, followed by two stolen bases to put herself in scoring position. Rightfielder Brittany Carver (Gardiner, ME) then nailed a double to bring Blanchard home and put SMCC on the scoreboard. A triple by shortstop Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) sent Carver home and then Allard stole home, diving under the tag attempt by catcher Sahara Brown to give the Seawolves three runs. After a great fifth inning the Seawolves came up empty in the sixth and seventh, falling to the Lynx 8-3. Carver lead the Seawolves on offense with two doubles and an RBI.

Game two was all about great pitching by Lady Lynx pitcher Tori Lamay and the Lady Seawolves own Charlotte Lewis and team defense. After three innings neither team had managed to get themselves on the scoreboard, but the Lady Lynx struck first in the fourth inning putting up two runs. They scored two more in the fifth, putting the Seawolves at a four run disadvantage but the Seawolves wouldn't be defeated easily. In the seventh inning Blanchard started off with a single to get on base. Carver then hit a single of her own advancing Blanchard. With runners on first and second, centerfielder Michaela Desjardins (Fort Kent, ME) singled but Carver was picked off enroute to second, leaving runners on first and third with one out. Lady Lynx pitcher Tori Lamay went to work on Seawolves second baseman Taylor Clapp (Richmond, ME), striking her out and then Allard popped out to the Lynx' shortstop, leaving the runners stranded and giving the Lynx a 4-0 victory.

With these losses the Seawolves drop to 11-19 and 4-7 in YSCC play. The Seawolves will get a much deserved off day tomorrow and return to action on Monday at home against Dean College at 1pm.
