Lady Seawolves Fall to Dean in Double Header

Lady Seawolves Fall to Dean in Double Header

South Portland - The Lady Seawolves dropped a pair today against the Lady Bulldogs of Dean College in this afternoon's double header softball action. In game one there were three lead changes before Dean finally took the lead for the final time in the fifth inning with a 6-4 advantage, eventually pulling away with the 9-7 victory. In the second game the Bulldogs held on to a 4-3 lead at the end of the second inning and managed to hold the Seawolves scoreless for the remaining five innings en route to a 5-3 triumph.

After two and a half innings of play in the first game Dean found themselves up 3-0, but Seawolves' centerfielder Michaela Desjardins (Fort Kent, ME) put SMCC on the scoreboard when she came home off an Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) double. Allard proceeded to score on a hit by pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH) and then first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) crushed one over the fence bringing in two runs and giving the Lady Seawolves their first lead of the game, 4-3. Dean was able to keep the Seawolves scoreless in innings four through six, while putting up three runs of their own in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Going into the bottom of the seventh inning the Lady Bulldogs were up 9-4 when right fielder Brittany Carver (Gardiner, ME) singled to get on base. Desjardins followed up with a single of her own to put runners on first and second when Allard stepped up to plate and drilled a double batting in both runners. Catcher Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME) batted in Allard to pull the Seawolves to within two runs, but Bulldogs' third baseman Shelby Eldredge fielded a Gilio hit and threw her out at first base to get the final out of the game and defeat the Seawolves 9-7.

In game two the Seawolves were trailing 4-1 in the second inning when third baseman Shannon Blanchard (Windsor, ME) singled to get herself on first. Carver singled advancing Blanchard to second before Allard hit her home. Lewis hit Carver home to pull the Seawolves to within one run but Bulldogs pitcher Shelby Eldredge ended the inning with a strikeout on Trafton, her third strikeout of the inning. The Bulldogs tacked on a single run in the fifth to stretch the lead to two runs and eventually beat the Seawolves 5-3. Allard went three for four at the plate for the game to go with two stolen bases and an RBI.

After today's two games the Lady Seawolves drop to 11-21 overall and 4-7 in conference play. They will be back at it again tomorrow with a double header at home against EMCC at 3:30pm.
