UMPI Picks up Pair of Wins Over Lady Seawolves

South Portland - This afternoon the Lady Seawolves hosted UMaine-Presque Isle, currently ranked third in the USCAA, for double header softball action. Despite opening up both games competitively the Seawolves eventually dropped both game, 19-4 in the first and 7-2 in the second.

The Seawolves grabbed an early lead in the first inning of game one, when Maddie Wade (Brunswick, ME) scored off a Jen Genthner (Newcastle, ME) RBI single and then Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME) crossed the plate on a Grace Davis (Belfast, ME) ground out. SMCC's 2-1 lead was short lived as the Owls put up three runs in the second to take a 4-2 advantage and continued to chalk up 15 more runs in the next three innings to cruise to a 19-4 triumph. Genthner picked up the sole hit for the Lady Seawolves.

In game two the Seawolves gave up a lone run in the first and fourth innnings and kept the Owls scoreless in innings three, five and six but the second inning would prove to be the one that cost them the game. The Lady Seawolves gave up five runs in the second thanks in part to a two RBI double from Owls' sophomore Nicole Marucci. The Lady Seawolves tallied nine hits in game two but they were unable to get into the scorebooks until the sixth inning when Genthner sent one sailing over the fence for her first homerun of the season. The two run homer closed the UMPI lead to five but the Seawolves were unable to generate any further offense, eventually falling 7-2.

After this afternoons double header the Lady Seawolves fall to 2-8 overall. The games originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon have been postponed due to the impending weather.
