SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The SeaWolves offense got going early and often, tallying 26 total runs on the day as they split a doubleheader with the Nor'easters to open the season at Graves Athletic Field.

The University of New England (UNE) Club scored the first run of the afternoon in the second inning of game one, but SMCC responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. The Nor'easters added two more in the top of the third, but a strong outing from pitcher and first-year Erica Hill (Lisbon, Maine) kept UNE Club's offense in check and allowed the SeaWolves to pull away for a 12-3 win in five innings. Hill threw a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six. First-year Bella Marier went 2-4 with a triple and four RBI while Morgan Brown (Lewiston, Maine) and Taylor Mack (Moses Lake, Wash.) each added two RBI. First-year Emma Cousins (Wells, Maine) tallied a double, single and an RBI along with two stolen bags.

The SeaWolves offense kept pace in game two as they put up five runs in the first inning, but the Nor'easters bats woke up and rattled off 20 runs across the following six innings to take a 20-14 win. Mack went 3-5 in game two with an RBI, three runs scored and four stolen bases while Cousins notched two hits, two RBI and two stolen bases. Brown went 2-2 with two RBI and three walks and Marier added two hits and an RBI before closing out the game's final inning and ⅔ on the mound for SMCC. First-year Ronnie Anderson (Tooele, Utah) caught both games and went 4-5 at the plate with three runs scored in game two. Katy Pederson led UNE with three doubles and four RBI.

A doubleheader split to open the season featuring some high-powered offense got the first SMCC softball season since 2019 off to a hot start. Everyone pitched in, but a few SeaWolves put up numbers that stood out on Saturday.

SeaWolves Stars of the Day:

Emma Cousins: Four hits (one double), four steals, three RBI

Taylor Mack: Five hits, four steals, three RBI, three walks

Bella Marier: Four hits (one triple), five RBI, two walks, one stolen base
