WARWICK, R.I. – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team lost out in its road doubleheader at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) on Friday, April 14.
Game 1 (5 innings): L, 18-7 | [BOX]
The Knights took a quick lead and continued to add throughout. The Seawolves totaled a spring-high seven runs but couldn't keep pace with their counterparts.
First-year captain Ronnie Andersen (Tooele, Utah) managed two hits, two runs, and two RBI. First-year captain Emma Cousins (Wells, Maine) totaled a season-high three hits and three RBI; and first-year newcomer Jaylyn Bartolome (Sanford, Maine) contributed two hits and two runs herself.
CCRI's Lucie Willet scored a team-high four runs on the game and added a homerun. Teammate Jenna Medeiros posted two hits and three RBI from the clean-up position.
SMCC starter Hailie Casey (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) threw a complete-game with two punch-outs. On the other side, Victoria Butler was credited the win.
Game 2 (6 innings): L, 14-5 | [BOX]
Again, the Knights managed a steady stream of runs that kept the Seawolves at bay. Andersen added to a big afternoon with three extra-base hits, just a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Cousins also tallied another multi-hit game and two more RBI.
CCRI's Ashley Klingberg was a perfect 5-5 from the dish and scored all five times she reached base.
This time it was Casey and first-year Chloe Truman (South Paris, Maine) who took on the pitching duty for the Seawolves. Knights' starter Samantha Marsella tossed five to earn the win.
The results move SMCC to 1-15 overall.
The Seawolves will play host to the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College on Senior Day Friday, Apr. 21. First-pitch from Graves Athletic Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
