Lady Seawolves swept at Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season at NCAA Div. 3 Thomas College on Thursday, Apr. 18.

Game 1: L, 12-5

Thomas took an early lead posting six runs in the second inning. SMCC answered the bell scoring in both the third and fifth innings, but the home team closed the game in the bottom of the fifth by the 8-run rule pushing across four more.

Thomas' Maddie Rock and Megan Oberholze combined for five hits and five RBIs. SMCC's Delanie Perry (DeLand, Fl.) and Jaida Case (Machias, Maine) both recorded multi-hit games, Perry with three RBIs.

Addy Boyce picked up the win for Thomas allowing six hits over a complete game performance. First-year co-captain Sarah Wilkins (Alberta, Canada) was taxed the loss, but allowed just one earned run.

Game 2: L, 9-1

Once again, Thomas started first scoring four runs in the second inning, adding two more in the fourth to gain enough separation. The Seawolves' offense couldn't find its rhythm at the plate spreading six hits over six innings.

Rock put together another impressive performance for the home team with four hits and three RBIs. First-year Veronica Mercier (Bangor, Maine) collected two hits in three trips to the plate and scored SMCC's lone run.

The Thomas starter, Jennie Whitten, struck out six to earn the win. Case went the distance for the Seawolves and suffered the loss.

The results push SMCC to 12-4 overall.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, Apr. 19 when they travel to Bay Bath University for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch from Longmeadow, Mass. is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
