#1 SeaWolves Conquer Knights

WARWICK, R.I.—  Fresh off its number one ranking in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches Poll, the Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team grabbed another road win in the team's first game back since the semester break. The SeaWolves defeated the Knights of the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) 62-54 in a non-conference game on Saturday, Jan. 7.

First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) led all scorers in the game with 17, knocking down five of eight from beyond the arc. Sophomore Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) poured in 12 points as fellow sophomore Emily Keene (Livermore Falls, Maine) contributed with 11, making all three of her three-point attempts. First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals in her team's winning effort.

The SeaWolves held the slight 26-24 advantage at the half, but outscored their opponent by nine in the third quarter to eventually win by an eight-point margin.

SMCC improves to 14-1 overall and starts the new semester with a new winning streak.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "Tonight was a great team win. Although we struggled to get going in the first half, our offense found its rhythm in the third quarter posting 21 points. Having both Keene and Ruth come off the bench to combine for eight three-pointers gave the team a boost. Farquharson was an excellent leader in the game and really put the team on her back. It's great to be back and playing games again!"

The action continues when the SeaWolves play host to the Bobcats from Paul Smith's College on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) contest at the HUB Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
