SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— Head Coach Garrett Lewellen and the women’s volleyball program return for their second season ahead of an 18-match schedule in 2022.
In their inaugural 2021 season, the Lady SeaWolves finished 7-6 overall and reached the semifinal game of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championship tournament. SMCC will begin a new slate and conference competition on Saturday, September 3 against NHTI and Massasoit Community College (NJCAA).
The SeaWolves return the favor and play at Massasoit on Friday, September 9 before getting conference foes Great Bay Community College and Central Maine Community College in Auburn, Maine on Saturday, September 10.
SMCC will host the Knights from Northern Essex Community College (NJCAA) inside the HUB Athletics Building on Thursday, September 15—the SeaWolves swept the season series a season ago. The team will travel to Concord, N.H. to take on two YSCC opponents in NHTI and Vermont Technical College before another mid-week single, this one at Bunker Hill Community College (NJCAA) on Thursday, September 22.
SMCC will road trip to the newest YSCC program and the Knights of Vermont Tech to get the host and the reigning YSCC champions Paul Smith’s College on Sunday, September 25. Next, Coach Lewellen will try and solve Great Bay with singles in a home and away split to finish the month and begin October—the SeaWolves played to a 1-2 record against the Herons in 2021.
SMCC makes its second trip to Concord, N.H. to battle Paul Smith’s before another date in Auburn to take on the University of Maine at Fort Kent (USCAA Div. 1) and the host Central Maine Mustangs on Sunday, October 9. The SeaWolves round out the regular season with singles against Central Maine and Bay Path College (USCAA Div. 1) at the HUB.
The 2022 season will finish with the YSCC Final Four championship tournament hosted at SMCC on Oct. 23 followed by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. spanning Nov. 10-14.
Coach Lewellen, 2021 YSCC Coach of the Year, stated, “What I’m looking forward to the most going into our second season is the opportunity we have to build on what we started last year. I am excited to be bringing back several of our players from last year; and working with them to improve their skills as well as having them mentor our first-years to continue to develop our volleyball culture. Our roster is fuller this year which will allow for more flexibility and specialization—we were limited last year due to our lower roster numbers. Our first-year players fill a lot of our needs from setting to hitting as well as back row specialists. We have a lot of work to do, but that’s the fun part.”
